Drive Clean Ontario – Emissions Test for Used Cars

drive-clean-ontario

Drive Clean Ontario program is Ontario’s car emissions program designed to limit emissions in participation with the global environmental movement. In 2013 this program was overhauled and strengthened, making it more difficult to pass.

Drive Clean Test Frequency

A drive clean is required every two years by the current owner of the vehicle registered to the Ministry of Transportation (“MTO”). You will be notified of the expiry and subsequent requirement when you try to renew your plate sticker.

When purchasing a used car, a Drive Clean may be necessary to register a vehicle. If an existing Drive Clean has not yet expired, you will not need to purchase a drive clean test prior to registration. You can check if the car is eligible for this exception at the official Drive Clean website.

Failure rates for 2013 Drive Clean program are upwards 70% at certain garages, please check our article detailing the changes to learn more.

If you are purchasing a used car, the safety standards certificate is required.>
